Mastering Municipal Finance: CSMFO’s Trio of New Courses

The ABCs of Municipal Finance - Taught by Russ Branson

Dive into the fundamental principles of local government finance with the brand new “ABCs of Municipal Finance" core course. This new half-day course was designed for early career members but caters to individuals of all backgrounds interested in gaining insights into the essentials of local government finance. Led by industry expert Russ Branson, participants will explore topics ranging from the organizational structure of finance departments to the intricacies of accounting practices, major financial documents, financial policies, and key legal frameworks. Designed as an introductory course to local government finance, the "ABCs of Municipal Finance" welcomes attendees with varying levels of experience. With a limited capacity of 60 participants, advance registration is required to secure your spot. The course is next scheduled for Thursday, April 25, 2024, from 8:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., and is priced at $100 for CSMFO members and $130 for non-members. For those unable to attend in April, the course will also be offered three additional times in 2024, providing ample opportunities for individuals to embark on their journey of understanding municipal finance fundamentals with CSMFO.

Financial Management and Analysis - Taught by David Cain and Scott Catlett

If you are ready to deepen your understanding of financial management within the public sector, "Financial Management and Analysis" delves into advanced concepts essential for effective decision-making. This class is ideal for all finance professionals, as well as city managers, department heads, and other non-finance professionals working in local government. Participants explore topics such as budget development, financial reporting, and strategic planning, equipping them with the knowledge and skills needed to navigate the complexities of municipal finance with confidence. Led by esteemed instructors David Cain and Scott Catlett, CSMFO leaders and seasoned finance professionals with extensive experience in municipal finance and education, "Financial Management and Analysis" promises an engaging and insightful learning experience. Through interactive discussions and case studies, attendees will gain practical tools and strategies for optimizing resource allocation, enhancing financial transparency, and fostering fiscal sustainability within their organizations. One notable aspect of the course is its focus on real-world scenarios, allowing participants to apply theoretical concepts to practical challenges encountered in their day-to-day roles. This is a two-part virtual course, with Modules 1 and 2 scheduled for April 17 & 18, 2024 and Modules 3 and 4 scheduled for June 5 & 6.

Public Speaking for Finance Professionals - Taught by Steve Yu

"Public Speaking for Finance Professionals" offers an engaging learning experience designed for individuals seeking to enhance their communication skills and confidence in public speaking. Led by Steve Yu, Chief Operating Officer/Chief Financial Officer of UCLA South Bay, this in-person session provides a full-day exploration of communication fundamentals, focusing on personal values, overcoming fear of public speaking, and speaking more effectively in public. Participants will learn to connect with their audience and build confidence in their communication abilities through engaging exercises and interactive discussions. This course will be offered in Southern California later this year. Keep your eyes open for the course announcement later this spring. Seats will be limited to ensure personalized feedback and attention for each participant, making this session an invaluable opportunity for professional development and growth in the realm of public speaking and communication effectiveness.
