From Intern to Professional: My Journey with the City of Stanton

Tuesday, June 4, 2024

When I began my internship with the City of Stanton in December 2022, I was still attending community college, working towards my Associate degree in Business Administration and Accounting. When I was seeking internship opportunities, my initial goal was to gain practical accounting experience to build my resume. At the time, I was not sure whether my future career goals included a career in the local government finance sector. This internship was my first real-world experience in a professional setting, and it provided invaluable insights into the operations of a city government finance department.

During my time at the City of Stanton, I gained hands-on experience in various areas of municipal finance, which laid a solid foundation for my career. I was involved in accounts payable, cash receipts, records retention, and the business license department. Additionally, I was cross trained in payroll. These diverse responsibilities allowed me to develop a comprehensive understanding of city finance operations and enhanced my skill set significantly.

A pivotal aspect of my professional development was my involvement with the California Society of Municipal Finance Officers (CSMFO), a statewide association for finance professionals. CSMFO offers education, events, and resources for its members and the public. My Finance Director, Michelle Bannigan, welcomed me to join CSMFO as a student member, where I gained additional education about municipal finance through webinars and was able to meet other municipal finance professionals by attending the Orange County Chapter meetings. This membership also afforded me the opportunity to secure a student scholarship to attend the 2024 CSMFO Annual Conference.

The 2024 CSMFO Annual Conference was an enriching experience, offering a wealth of new information and insights from industry experts. One session delved into the transformative potential of financial automation and generative AI, unveiling how these technologies can boost efficiency, enhance accuracy, and streamline collaboration in financial processes. One of the key highlights was learning about Microsoft's Copilot, with the latest features being explored to demonstrate its practical applications in finance. This exposure to cutting-edge advancements in financial technology has significantly broadened my understanding and equipped me with innovative tools to apply in my professional endeavors.

The practical knowledge and skills I acquired at the City of Stanton played a crucial role in helping me secure my first full-time position as an Accounting Technician for the City of Seal Beach. This transition marked a significant milestone in my professional journey, validating the hard work and dedication I invested during my internship.

Currently, I am a senior at California State University, Fullerton, pursuing my bachelor’s degree in business administration, with an emphasis in accounting. My experiences at the City of Stanton not only prepared me for my role at the City of Seal Beach, but also enriched my academic pursuits. The blend of practical and theoretical knowledge continues to shape my professional identity and career aspirations.

Looking back, my journey from an intern at the City of Stanton to a full-time accounting professional has been both rewarding and educational. The City of Stanton provided me with the real-life work experience I needed to thrive in the field of municipal finance, and I am grateful for the opportunities and growth this internship has afforded me.
