2022 marked CSMFO’s 65th year as a professional association, and I was honored to have been elected by the membership to be your President this past year – a year where we saw a return to an in-person Annual Conference, the hiring of a new Executive Director, the launch of CSMFO’s cohort and mentorship programs, and the continuation of so many successful CSMFO initiatives that I’ve been privileged to watch develop and participate in over my 17 years of membership in this organization. All of this is thanks to an outstanding network of volunteer leaders and committee members, and I must begin this message by thanking them for their service to CSMFO. Without their energy, engagement, and enthusiasm this organization would not be what it is today.

As I began marking the end of my presidential year on stage in San Diego on February 16, 2022, I was overwhelmed with gratitude for how collectively and successfully navigate CSMFO through another pandemic scarred year. It all seemed so clear in January 2020 at the Anaheim conference when I pointed north and sang (horribly) “Do you know the way to San Jose?” Well, you did, but we never got their physically. But where we did get to, might have been even better. I sit today so proud and absolutely humbled by what we achieved together in 2021. Our 2021 Together Toward Tomorrow conference theme in hindsight contained the life hack on how to thrive through 2021, despite the struggles we faced. We’d do it together, moving methodically day by day.

For obvious reasons, 2020 will not be soon forgotten. In spite of the tremendous public health and associated economic and other challenges brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic, as the preeminent resource for promoting excellence in government finance, CSMFO continues to deliver high-quality services for its members. This 2020 Annual Report reflects a summary of our association’s accomplishments this past year, in spite of the numerous obstacles we’ve all faced during this difficult time. I am immensely proud of the continuing efforts of our CSMFO member volunteers and our dedicated staff. Our 2020 Annual Conference, Yesterday, Tomorrow and Finance, took place at the Disneyland Hotel in late January. Although bigger is not always better, we enjoyed record-setting participation, topping out at just over 2,000 attendees. Including our Tuesday preconference classes, we offered nearly 60 educational sessions and welcomed in excess of 400 first-time conference attendees over four action-packed days. By all objective measures, the conference was a huge success.
