Editor's Alley The Benefits of Being a Member and Volunteer for CSMFO By: Heidi Schoeppe, President/Managing Director, Webb Municipal Finance, LLC
When most people hear “municipal finance,” they may not immediately think of excitement, personal growth, or meaningful connections. But for members and volunteers of the California Society of Municipal Finance Officers (CSMFO), these elements are very much a part of the experience. This organization isn’t just about numbers and budgets—it’s about people, shared purpose, and the opportunity to thrive professionally in a supportive, knowledgeable community.
A Friendly Reminder: Get Involved Volunteering with CSMFO can be one of the most rewarding aspects of membership. It opens the door to new experiences, leadership development, and lasting professional relationships. I currently serve on the Communications Committee, the Professional Standards Committee, and the Leadership Team for the Inland Empire Chapter—and yes, I still manage to get my day job done. These roles have allowed me to contribute meaningfully to the organization while working alongside dedicated peers from across the state. Getting involved doesn’t have to mean a major time commitment. Whether you serve on a committee, help plan a local chapter event, or simply attend a meeting, every contribution supports the continued success of the organization. Build Professional Contacts—and Lifelong Friendships One of the most valuable aspects of CSMFO membership is the opportunity to build relationships with peers throughout California. From local chapter meetings and annual conferences to virtual committee discussions, CSMFO creates space for members to share ideas, ask questions, and learn from each other. These connections often grow beyond the professional realm. Many of us have formed lasting friendships—colleagues we turn to for guidance, support, or even just a laugh after a long budget season.
Support Each Other and Be a Resource Volunteering is also a chance to give back to the profession. Whether it's reviewing best practices, mentoring newer members, or organizing training sessions, we all play a part in elevating each other’s work. The mutual support shared among members is one of the reasons CSMFO continues to be such a strong and respected organization. We don’t just grow individually—we also grow together.
Learn, Teach, and Earn Valuable CPE Professional development is a key component of CSMFO’s mission. From webinars and workshops to the Annual Conference, members have access to high-quality educational programming that offers valuable Continuing Professional Education (CPE) credits. For those interested in sharing their expertise, volunteering also provides the opportunity to present and teach others—whether through formal sessions or informal mentoring. It’s a great way to sharpen your skills, expand your influence, and contribute to the development of the broader municipal finance community.
Stay Connected: Update Your Member Profile A quick but important reminder: if you're a CSMFO member, make sure your membership profile is current. Include your chapter affiliation and ensure your contact information is up to date. Staying connected is key to receiving invitations to events, accessing training opportunities, and earning CPE credit throughout the year. Don’t miss out simply because your email address is still tied to a position you left two promotions ago!
Final Thoughts: Get Involved, Stay Involved, and Make It Count If you’ve been considering getting more involved in CSMFO, now is a great time to take that next step. Even a small commitment can lead to meaningful opportunities for growth, learning, and connection. You’ll expand your network, enhance your skills, and become part of a community that truly understands the value of your work. So take a moment to update your profile, connect with your chapter, and say “yes” to something new. You might be surprised by how far it takes you—professionally and personally.
